Ron Smith ain't your average police union president.

Ha. Our outgoing union president last year told me one of the things he absolutely wasn't going to miss was the phone calls to cops staying horrendously stupid things on Facebook and explaining that the 1st Amendment meant they wouldn't be jailed for that shit but that keeping their govt job was a whole other matter.

I guess this post raises the question where do you draw the line?
For instance do you think you could run this blog and be an active police officer given the nature of some of the opinions you've expressed concerning race or the drug war?

I don't think I could do this if I were an active police officer. though I did write an op-ed in the Baltimore Sun as an active cop and faced no repercussions.

I can't actually think of why somebody would object to this blog, but I'm sure somebody would. If nothing else, advocating for drug legalization is still taboo in police departments (which for some reason does not extend to other forms of criminal justice reform).
